That’s the challenge the developers behind Lazy Surfer set out to solve. They envisioned an app that could go beyond the traditional surf forecast by combining localized weather data with each surfer’s personal preferences.
To make that possible, Lazy Surfer incorporates NOAA buoy observations alongside localized wind data from the Synoptic platform. Wind conditions can change dramatically over relatively short distances, and those local differences often determine whether a surf break is worth the trip. By using Synoptic’s quality-controlled weather observations, the app gives surfers a more accurate picture of the conditions they’ll actually encounter, not just a general forecast.
The result is a surf experience that’s tailored to the individual. Users create a profile, rate past sessions, and receive recommendations based on the conditions they enjoy most. New surfers can rely on an easy-to-understand surf score, while experienced surfers can dig into the underlying weather and ocean observations to make their own decisions.
Today, Lazy Surfer has been downloaded more than 80,000 times and serves surfers across the United States. The app offers free forecasts several days in advance, with premium users able to plan as far as a week ahead.
