With our Open Access program, Synoptic provides over 700 customers complimentary weather data services for research (using real-time or historical data) or hobbies that rely on knowing current conditions. Open Access users have access to a limited amount of data for their application and often use it in interesting ways. Nick Wilder from Wild Adventures provides paragliders in Colorado important wind information for pilots to check current conditions.
Using API data from Synoptic, he shares wind information on a map for the Front Range, Rockies, and West Slope areas. Nick’s website is simple and easy for pilots to use to check conditions. We asked Nick what he likes about our API, and he shared, “It’s really easy to use, provides the data we need, and has access to a ton of weather stations that don’t seem to have API data elsewhere. Also, it’s easier to use one API that aggregates data than to have to use a bunch of different ones.”
It’s interesting to see all the ways our users are implementing the data into their programs. Whether it’s for hobbies like paragliding or critical applications where operations personnel need information for quick decisions, our Weather API is delivering data to users for a wide variety of applications. Bringing access to weather and environmental data for all is our core mission at Synoptic and it’s exciting to see our mission at work.
