Synoptic’s new Metadata Explorer is a tool that provides information about the data available in our platform. We’ve made it easy to discover the location, variables, and historical archive of the observations we can provide through our Weather API and Dashboard tools. Here are five reasons to check out this new tool:

1. Discover Available Data – The Synoptic Metadata Explorer is a free tool for you to discover global observation locations, as well as which networks and variables are available.

2. Historical Archive – Uncover the period of record for each station and how much historical data is available from the Synoptic platform.

3. Station Status – Depending on the network, some are only active during certain periods of the year, such as avalanche networks. There are also instances where stations within a network may not be reporting, such as snow depth during warmer months. Quickly view the available networks and number of stations that are currently reporting data (and those that are not).

4. Public and Restricted NetworksEasily filter the data to see which networks are publicly available and which are restricted. Many of the restricted networks can be purchased through the Synoptic platform.

5. Filter to Find Exactly What You Need – An easy filtering system allows you to search data by variable, network, or country. If you’re only looking for data in a certain country or state, the tool allows you to concentrate your search to that region.
