Low Altitude Weather Network (LAWN)
Synoptic has ingested a new and unique network into our platform: the Low Altitude Weather Network (LAWN), developed by FlightProfiler LLC in partnership with Ohio University and The Ohio State University.
LAWN’s Visibility Tool is an app that turns any smartphone into a real-time visibility sensor. A user simply points their phone at the horizon, takes a photo, and receives an instant visibility estimate. No cell connectivity is required, anywhere in the world. The observation data is collected, archived, and available through the Synoptic platform. Data coverage is anywhere the app is used, which can be globally. Synoptic currently has visibility observations from a growing collection of user-submitted reports spanning a diverse range of locations and operating environments. |

The network addresses a genuine gap in aviation weather coverage. Traditional visibility sensors are located at fixed sites, typically near airports, which is great for many applications. However, a drone operator or low-altitude pilot, for example, may be 10 or more miles from the nearest station, which may not reflect actual visibility at their location. LAWN observations are generated at the point of operation, in real time. |

While the primary user base is drone operators, UAS pilots, and general aviation pilots, the network has also seen adoption among fire weather operations staff, utility companies, and civil engineers, any application where on-the-ground visibility matters.
Accessing LAWN through Synoptic: LAWN is a private, restricted network and will not appear in Synoptic's Data Viewer due to the nature of how data is collected. Users may access the data by contacting Synoptic and purchasing data services. The aggregated observation data is well-suited for significant weather event analysis, visibility research, model validation, and other analytics applications.

Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) |
|
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) network is now available on the Synoptic platform, providing access to 59 stations across the Netherlands that report standard meteorological variables at up to 10-minute intervals. Operated by the Netherlands' national weather service, the network delivers high-quality observations across a region that is critical for transportation, renewable energy, agriculture, hydrology, and weather forecasting. With reliable, frequently updated data from both inland and coastal locations, KNMI observations help users monitor rapidly changing conditions and gain greater insight into weather patterns across the Netherlands and the broader North Sea region.

Updated Network: Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) |
|
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) network has been updated in the Synoptic platform and is ready for use in our Weather API and Data Viewer. As part of our continuous improvement process and commitment to data integrity and security, Synoptic proactively modernizes how data is ingested from a data provider to ensure users have reliable access to the data. Updating the DMI network means users have access to observations from over 150 stations reporting standard meteorological variables at up to 10-minute intervals. |

Delivering dense, high-frequency coverage across Denmark, including coastal and maritime regions, DMI observations support a wide range of applications from agriculture and aviation to renewable energy, marine forecasting, and climate research. With reliable, timely observations from one of Northern Europe's leading meteorological networks, users can gain greater insight into weather conditions across Denmark and the surrounding North Sea region.
