In-situ Data Versus Gridded Data - Which One is Best to Use?

With so much attention on gridded weather products, it’s easy to overlook the value of real-time observations. Direct, real-time measurements from physical weather stations provide a detailed level of accuracy and reliability, where gridded models rely on interpolation and estimation. Through our 20+ years of experience working with customers making critical decisions

for forecasting and warnings, utility operations, emergency management, or other weather-sensitive applications, we have seen the value of helping them understand this distinction.

Relying solely on gridded data can leave gaps in situational awareness, but using in-situ measurements leads to more accurate, actionable weather intelligence. Read the full story where we break down why in-situ sensor data—direct from the field—is essential for accurate, high-resolution decision-making.

Did you know that Synoptic offers a variety of private data networks on our platform? This month we are highlighting the innovative WeatherXM network. WeatherXM is a hyper-local weather observation network that leverages a global community of station owners. This unique, community-driven approach helps fill critical data gaps, offering highly granular and real-time weather information, especially in areas traditionally under-observed by conventional weather infrastructure.

By accessing WeatherXM data through Synoptic, you gain:
  • Global, High Density Data: Access real-time data from over 8,000 stations across ~80 countries. The WeatherXM network is continuously expanding, especially in high-demand areas.
  • Enhanced Precision: Benefit from the localized, real-time measurements that are vital for weather-critical applications.
  • Data Quality Assurance: WeatherXM's innovative Quality of Data (QoD) scoring system ensures reliable contributions from its network. Additionally, Synoptic adds its quality control to all data in the system, ensuring you’re getting accurate information.
When precise weather intelligence is needed, the WeatherXM data available on our platform can significantly enhance your decision-making and operational efficiency.

Ready to explore the power of decentralized weather data? Read our blog post to learn more about the WeatherXM network and how you can seamlessly integrate its valuable data into your workflows via the Synoptic Data marketplace!

Product Spotlight: Push Streaming Service

For applications that demand high-frequency, low-latency environmental data, Synoptic’s Push Streaming Service is the solution. Instead of polling for updates, this service delivers observational data directly to your systems the moment it’s received. Built on the open-source MQTT protocol, Push Streaming is scalable and ideal for users who need continuous, real-time access to weather and environmental data.

With the Push Streaming Service, Weather API users get a customizable flow of real-time data with quality control checks. Filters can be applied to the data to reduce the stream of data, such as including one or more thresholds that must be exceeded for the data to be pushed.

We’ve integrated over 80 fixed-position buoy stations from the Gulf of America Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS) into the Synoptic platform. These stations provide vital marine and atmospheric data across the Gulf, supporting coastal management, maritime safety, and environmental research. By bringing GCOOS observations into our network, we’re expanding access to buoy information and helping make high-quality coastal data more accessible for a wide range of operational and scientific applications. These stations measure water level, water temperature, salinity, and other atmospheric conditions.

Southern Nevada Water Authority

We’ve added six buoy stations from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) to the Synoptic platform, expanding access to real-time water and weather observations throughout Lake Mead in southern Nevada. These stations support SNWA’s mission to manage and protect water resources in one of the most arid regions of the country. The buoy stations measure 14 different variables, including water temperature, wave direction and wave height, along with atmospheric conditions. We’re pleased to collaborate with SNWA to share the data for public access.
